Round up of recent commissions

I’ve been a busy bee with a new course at the House of Illustration, learning how to make children’s picture books alongside commissions and commercial illustration work. It’s been a brilliant couple of months and I’ve loved every minute! I can’t show you the commercial work yet, but here are one or two recent commissions, they make a lovely gift – £100 unframed with background or £120 in a simple wooden frame. Alternatively the portrait illustrations are £45 or £60 in a frame.

Give the gift of illustration

So, I’m now fully booked for Christmas illustrations BUT you can still buy your lovely friends and family an original illustration for Christmas as I’m now offering gift cards!

You decide what you’d like to pay for – a portrait illustration (£45 unframed) or a ‘favourite things’ illustration (£100 unframed), I will send you a very beautiful voucher presented in an Emma Marsh Designs ‘Ruby and the Bear’ Christmas card, to give to the lucky recipient on Christmas day!

It’s a quirky alternative to a photoshoot pressie, and it means that your friend can choose exactly what they would like included – family pets, special toys, their own garden… A really thoughtful, original gift!

Get in touch at emma@laserra.co.uk to order a gift card in plenty of time for Christmas!

Christmas commissions

It’s been a really exciting few weeks and I’ve got a lovely mixed bag of work at the moment! I’ve been working on a bit of branding and graphic design for a new company launching in Rutland in the New Year, illustrating a Christmas card for a construction training centre and designing a tattoo for the lovely Brooke of Handmade by Brooke.

The best bit has been working on some fantastic commissions – 2 boys in their superhero den, 3 children walking the dog, 2 busy boys biking at Rutland Water, a seaside portrait with someone else’s dog, 2 more boys with their pallet creations in the garden, individual portraits with guinea pigs, rabbits, and cuddlies! It’s been brilliant! And as almost everything is for Christmas it’s all TOP SECRET!

If you’re wobbling on the fence thinking you might just want a Christmas illustration please get in touch soon, I still have a few spaces left for pre-Christmas commissions, but not for long! They really are such a lovely pressie, and I can now deliver to anywhere in the UK, beautifully packed and ready to hang on the wall.

In other news, I have been working hard on my Christmas cards and I’m really hoping to have them printed and ready to buy in the next fortnight… here is a sneaky peak at the work in progress stage… watch this space!

Portrait illustration

Something new! I’m now offering portrait illustrations!

This simple & stylish portrait costs £45 unframed, and is based on a photo of your choice. The picture is hand drawn in pencil and finished in watercolour. I’ve got space for a few before Christmas, so let me know if you fancy one, I can also frame the picture for you for an extra £15.

I’ve got all sorts of ideas for these… stationery… cards… keep you posted!

Illustration of your child – a few of my favourite things

I’ve been taking orders for Christmas presents over the last couple of weeks and the ‘a few of my favourite things’ illustrations have been really popular!

The illustration costs £100 unframed, and features your child in the setting of their choice, with some of their favourite things around them. As a sneaky peek in my pile right now there are; a little girl at the funfair, 2 boys in the garden, a Norfolk paddler and 2 more boys, this time as superheroes! And that’s only a few! I am loving the variety of ideas and all the detail I can get in, from nail varnish to guinea pigs, bikes, comics and even favourite packets of crisps.

I have space for a few more over the next few weeks, so if you’re interested do get in touch! I also have some lovely white wooden frames which really set the pictures off, so for an extra £20 your present is all done and dusted, no hassle at all. Finished pieces are 20cm x 20cm, all original artwork.

Portrait of Fred

I’ve been working on a looser watercolour style and decided to try out a portrait of Fred from an image I took of him a couple of weeks ago. It began as a pencil study and ended up as a big watercolour, I’m pleased with it (apart from the hair), and it feels like cheeky Fred, but I want to try again and see if I can keep the lightness as well as the strong colours – it’s a bit muddy.

I want to use the broken colours and shapes that Freud combines to give an earthy fleshiness to his paintings of skin. It’s exciting to try…

Norfolk cliffs

I’ve been working up some of my sketches into more finished pieces, also loving catching up on the SkyArts Portrait Artist of the Year series and learning loads from watching their techniques – especially loving the drip paintings as you can see…

The first sketch was done in situ using pen and coloured chalk pencils, then I worked the cliffs up in watercolour and finally added a dark black/blue layer using a thick watercolour mix and drawing with a stick. I’m really pleased with the vitality of the finished piece.

I got the idea from watching Nick Lord use drips to add texture to his large scale pieces

I tried out the stick technique on a couple of old watercolours I did after a trip to Salamanca last year, that have been waiting for stage 2
