Round up of recent commissions

I’ve been a busy bee with a new course at the House of Illustration, learning how to make children’s picture books alongside commissions and commercial illustration work. It’s been a brilliant couple of months and I’ve loved every minute! I can’t show you the commercial work yet, but here are one or two recent commissions, they make a lovely gift – £100 unframed with background or £120 in a simple wooden frame. Alternatively the portrait illustrations are £45 or £60 in a frame.

Give the gift of illustration

So, I’m now fully booked for Christmas illustrations BUT you can still buy your lovely friends and family an original illustration for Christmas as I’m now offering gift cards!

You decide what you’d like to pay for – a portrait illustration (£45 unframed) or a ‘favourite things’ illustration (£100 unframed), I will send you a very beautiful voucher presented in an Emma Marsh Designs ‘Ruby and the Bear’ Christmas card, to give to the lucky recipient on Christmas day!

It’s a quirky alternative to a photoshoot pressie, and it means that your friend can choose exactly what they would like included – family pets, special toys, their own garden… A really thoughtful, original gift!

Get in touch at emma@laserra.co.uk to order a gift card in plenty of time for Christmas!

Sophia in the woods

Here’s a Christening commission I’ve just finished, really enjoyed this one! Little Sophia loves bunnies and her Auntie wanted an illustration of her in a woodland glade, we managed to include her family cat, lots of rabbits, 2 of her cousins peeping out from behind a tree, as well as a rainbow and lots of butterflies!

Christmas commissions are fully booked now, but these make lovely gifts for all sorts of things – Christenings, birthdays, a starting school present…

Mary Poppins

My Grandma is 84 today! She is the centre of our family unit and we love her dearly. Two good things have coincided with Grandma (Great Gran)’s birthday, one I have a new printer, and two, Mary Poppins is coming to Leicester Curve…

Cue a happy Friday night pulling together a quick card design for her, whipping it off the new printer, and a secret plan (hatched long ago when tickets were still available) to take the whole family to see Mary Poppins at half term, she will be so excited! My two will also be so excited! I am so excited! We’re all excited…!

Here’s a sneaky peek at the super quick card design I did for her, birthday tea later, flowers to pick, presents to make and pictures to draw now with two very devoted great grandchildren!

Portrait illustration

Something new! I’m now offering portrait illustrations!

This simple & stylish portrait costs £45 unframed, and is based on a photo of your choice. The picture is hand drawn in pencil and finished in watercolour. I’ve got space for a few before Christmas, so let me know if you fancy one, I can also frame the picture for you for an extra £15.

I’ve got all sorts of ideas for these… stationery… cards… keep you posted!

Illustration of your child – a few of my favourite things

I’ve been taking orders for Christmas presents over the last couple of weeks and the ‘a few of my favourite things’ illustrations have been really popular!

The illustration costs £100 unframed, and features your child in the setting of their choice, with some of their favourite things around them. As a sneaky peek in my pile right now there are; a little girl at the funfair, 2 boys in the garden, a Norfolk paddler and 2 more boys, this time as superheroes! And that’s only a few! I am loving the variety of ideas and all the detail I can get in, from nail varnish to guinea pigs, bikes, comics and even favourite packets of crisps.

I have space for a few more over the next few weeks, so if you’re interested do get in touch! I also have some lovely white wooden frames which really set the pictures off, so for an extra £20 your present is all done and dusted, no hassle at all. Finished pieces are 20cm x 20cm, all original artwork.

Illustrated scrapbooks

I love illustration and at the beginning of the summer I was loosening up and trying all sorts of new things, one of which was illustrating a couple of scrapbooks as gifts for our lovely reception teachers at my daughter’s school. All of the parents contributed by sending photos of their children and messages, either hand written, written by the kids or sent to me by email to be transcribed. I used my trusty washi tape and my top fave Faber Castel markers to jazz them up a bit.

The books came from Paperchase and I imported some amazing gold felt from the US to do the lettering on the front which looked awesome against the linen.

And even better, I got a commission to do a personalised book for a friend, so that will start next week and I’m really excited to get going with it!

a bit of chalkboard inspiration

I’ve been working some designs up into a chalkboard style – even got a commission based on the ‘I will be loving you’ format!

Fred’s had a change around in his bedroom and I’ve been wanting to do some knight prints for a while, I also had a few sketches for the mermaid and elderly couple design knocking around so it was good to get these worked up. Really enjoying working in simple black and white and aiming to get a load of these transferred over to the etsy shop soon…

I added colour to the text only designs, and these are A4 size and will go up in Fred’s room for now, but would make good personalisable prints I think.

babies babies babies

Some new work today – lots of friends have had babies recently/are expecting, so I’m working on babies designs! Today I did a card design and a box repeat… here goes…

patterns and new kit

my laptop’s been on its last legs for some time so finally I’ve made the leap to a Mac, which is quite a learning curve at the moment. I’m trying to keep up with my surface pattern course at the same time as preparing for a craft fair and setting up a brand new website for my secret new collaboration (can’t wait to start shouting about it – hopefully next week!). So this week it’s been all about sketchbooks, mark making, layering and colour. Loving getting back to sketching and it’s been apples all day for some reason. These are some bits I’ve been working on today…
